Upon graduation from the University of Missouri at Kansas City School of Law, Joan joined Lathrop & Gage and practiced in the commercial litigation department representing the Resolution Trust Corporation and various local companies in breach of contract and breach of fiduciary duty claims. She took some time away from the practice of law to focus on raising her two children, during which time she was active in volunteer work in the community, including volunteering for her children’s schools and fundraising for various local charities, such as The Children’s Place, Children’s TLC, Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, and MOCSA.
During the first few years after Joan joined Wagstaff & Cartmell in 2009, she assisted other attorneys in the representation of the State of Kansas in a contract dispute with major tobacco companies relating to payments under the 1998 Master Settlement Agreement, in a class action suit alleging antitrust violations among private equity firms, in a class action suit involving environmental property damage affecting Northwest Missouri landowners, and in various mass tort cases alleging injurious exposures to toxic substances and devices. The primary focus of her practice during that time was performing and managing document review and analysis and coding of documents associated with large-case document discovery and production.
Joan continues to represent clients in various types of commercial litigation disputes. This representation involves legal research and drafting of pleadings, memoranda, motions, and briefs; defending and taking depositions; managing the discovery process; and trial preparation.
Recently, Joan has become more engaged in representing plaintiffs in multi-district litigation cases against transvaginal mesh manufacturers.
