Were You or a Loved One Harmed by the SpaceOAR® or SpaceOAR Vue™ Hydrogel Spacer?
You May Be Entitled to Compensation
If you or someone you care about underwent prostate cancer radiation treatment and received a SpaceOAR or SpaceOAR Vue hydrogel spacer and experienced rectal injury or other serious injuries, you may be entitled to compensation. Serious injuries have been reported secondary to this device and, and safety warnings were allegedly withheld from doctors and patients alike.
What Is SpaceOAR and SpaceOAR Vue?
Marketed by Boston Scientific, SpaceOAR and its newer version, SpaceOAR Vue, are hydrogel devices implanted between the prostate and rectum prior to radiation therapy for prostate cancer. Their goal? To protect the rectum by reducing radiation exposure.
But here’s the problem:
Boston Scientific allegedly failed to properly warn physicians and patients about serious risks, and the need to conduct careful follow up MRI imaging to confirm placement of the device before undergoing radiation therapy.
The device has been linked to rectal wall infiltration and serious injury.
What Went Wrong?
• Boston Scientific allegedly promoted SpaceOAR Vue as safe to use with CT scans alone, omitting the fact that CT imaging may not detect dangerous misplacements, such as rectal wall infiltration.
• MRI is often required to detect these issues, but doctors were told it was not necessary.
• Certain doctors may have failed to ensure that they had undergone proper training of the device before attempting to use it.
The following injuries have been reported to the Manufacturer and User Facility Device Experience (“MAUDE”) database after use of SpaceOAR and SpaceOAR Vue:
• Rectal fistula and other significant rectal injury
• Radiation-related and urinary complications
• The need for corrective surgery
If you have sustained serious injuries, you may have a legal claim.
